These archives do not always include things that I have written on my talk page myself. The history of my talk page may be seen for that. Sometimes not everything is archived, but a link is provided to the uncut version where this is the case. The page history of this archive includes the page history of my talk page between January and June 2004. This is to stop the page history getting too large to be useful. The history pre 2004 can be seen in the page history of archive 1.

Almost blank pages

[edit]

Dear Angela,

Thank-you for your advise, I'm a new user and was just checking to see if I had brought the article heading properly before I wrote up the complete entry.

If you return now you will find that I have written up a short entry on Hilary Benn.

Regards Dr Blix.

How d'you do that?

[edit]

Angela, how do you get your handy statistics? Not manually, I'm sure... -- Cyan 00:55, 4 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Unblanking VfD

[edit]

I didn't mean to at first; however after I made the mistake I thought it might be a good idea to leave it. The earlier pages have the material left on them. All in all either way is probably fine (until next year). - Hephaestos 01:09, 4 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Missing Wikipedians

[edit]

Hello Angela

Where is the page you listed the other day, where users who left are listed ? Anthère

yes :-) thanks. The french user I told you about returned today :-)

I did it again

[edit]

Angela,

I went and did it again. I misunderstood the implications for editing changes, and I renamed a page. Can you please expain to me the right way to do it in case I ever (grrr) do it again? I really am not trying to cause trouble.

Tom

Ok, but my computer's being really slow tonight so it'll be a few minutes. Angela 21:55, 4 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I have posted a reply to your comments on VfD. -- Cyan 01:11, 5 Sep 2003 (UTC)

International logo vote

[edit]

I am just a "bit" disgusted. A big bit. Never mind. The time I will earn not taking care of community matters, I will gain to do other things. Maps, new articles, meet people. Perhaps help on the simple en ? After all, international cooperation is not so important, and non english can very well make a communication effort and take care of their own matters individually. I'll try to see the bright side of it. Thanks anyway Angela.

In progress

[edit]

True, but i'd meant it in a specific (unclear) way: i was working on it busily at that moment, and didn't want to start stumbling over others' edits...my plan was to remove the note when i was done the worst--[[user:kwantus|Kwantus]

VfD Edit War

[edit]

NP. Eloquence has done this before over dates, assumed the role of Wiki God who decides that things aren't the way he believes they should be and does what he wants.

Once again, you are defaming me on another user's talk page. I do not appreciate that. In fact, the situation regarding the date policy was very similar: An established policy was unilaterally changed without even changing the policy document to reflect this (and you bullied people into following this new "policy"). I have, through the whole process, strived for a compromise solution, which we have recently arrived at.—Eloquence

I was a big critic of breaking up the pages but to my considerable surprise they worked. I can be a bit stubborn sometimes, and defending rights of people is a principle of mine, whether it is extreme pro-Israel supporters attacking Palestinians, or extreme Palestinians attacking Israel, the rights of people abused by clerics or the right of the Catholic Church to be treated fairly and objectively in articles, or in this case Eloquence in his 'God' mode deciding to create a system that disenfranchises many wiki users of IE (poor fools for using such a crap browser!) because he decides to. I would love to see a single VfD page, but for now the system adopted which initially was adopted against my wishes, is working far better than I ever imagined and I am not going to let Eloquence play God over it. Eloquence is a good and capable participant but his 'I am God' moments really really piss off a lot of people. This is just his latest performance of that. Thanks for the support. I really appreciate it. lol FearÉIREANN 03:02, 7 Sep 2003 (UTC)

The person playing God here are you, James. You are pursuing edit wars instead of engaging in civil discourse. You have big problems with following a defined conflict resolution process. I wonder why? Maybe you are used to being in a position of authority -- and transfer this authoritarian behavior to your wiki activities.—Eloquence 03:11, Sep 7, 2003 (UTC)

See what I mean about his God Complex! :-) Typical Eloquence, do things the way I want and then we can talk about it!!! FearÉIREANN 03:16, 7 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Hello... this is really not the place to have this argument.

[edit]

I asked at our pump. Our current bot guru is Utilisateur:Looxix. I'll tell you how it goes if needed.

Thanks for the logo stuff. I am quite embarassed actually, for now I should try to put a collection of decent ones, with proper size and resolution...and I really dont feel like it right now. And the fact my logo is not gonna be the winner does not help me feel motivated :-) I don't have the computer much at home these days. And I don't feel like doing international stuff these days. I am proud to be in the last 11, but would not have felt unhappy either not to be :-)

I would like to fix a couple of points, which have never been properly ended. I don't think proper that much talk goes on, and is lost because no one lead the discussion to its final decision.

Hi, Angela

[edit]

I have just added myself to Wikipedia:Cleaning department. If there's anything you think I should know, or any advice you want to give me, I welcome it on my talk page. Cheers, Cyan 22:45, 7 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Confused about dodgy page merges

[edit]

I am confused by a recent page move that you did. Talk:Egypt/Temp/Talk was formerly at Talk:Egypt/Temp, which is where I believe it belongs. Talk:Egypt/Temp/Talk is the talk page for the non-existent article Egypt/Temp/Talk. I'm going to move it back, but I want to know if this is wrong for some reason. -- Cyan 01:32, 8 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Check out the solution I devised and applied on List of songwriters. -- Cyan 02:16, 8 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I have asked Brion to unmix the edit histories of Talk:Egypt/Temp and its former talk page. (I tell you this mostly because I don't want you to think I've been talking about you behind your back.) -- Cyan 06:03, 8 Sep 2003 (UTC)

It's this one]. Re Brion's workload: you could be right. I'm just anal retentive about this sort of thing. -- Cyan 06:37, 8 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Undeletions

[edit]

Good morning Angela! Thanks for the deletion. Actually i was not aware that pages could be undeleted. But these ones are dead for good: their contents is now in the brand new Ancient Rome directory. I had real fun constructing it! Cheers, Muriel Gottrop 08:28, 10 Sep 2003 (UTC) PS - Great user page you have!

Engelsism

[edit]

Good move on the creation of move of Engelsism to the /delete page. I think using this form of page is a very good idea (and not just because I suggested it!!!) I've created a page linked to the VfD page where we can archive such debates after they have concluded. FearÉIREANN 23:34, 10 Sep 2003 (UTC)

How to revert

[edit]

Thanks for providing info about these. However the suggested method doesn't seem to work in current Wikipedia. If you are a sysop you might have a tool for this, but for the rest of us it seems that only editing the current page works, so more work is required to do fixing. Pity! -- David Martland 13:23, 11 Sep 2003 (UTC)

OK - thanks for your message - so it's very important not to click on cur or last. That makes more sense. I think I should be able to do it now. Thanks. -- David Martland 17:39, 11 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Talk page control

[edit]

(re user talk:RickK) Martin, please stop trying to wind him up. You don't do that to Eloquence who also does not link to the archives of his talk page when he deletes them. You can click on page history to see what has been removed so I can't understand your reasoning behind trying to enforce RickK, BuddhaInside, or anyone else to keep stuff they don't want on their talk page. Angela

Eloquence indicates that content has been deleted, which is all I really desire - given that indication, one can always click on page history. Given Jiang's views, I felt the blanking was inappropriate. However, I'll give way. Martin 13:48, 11 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Ignore the foul comments

[edit]

Please don't mind the foul comment made to you by that copyright violator. I read it, and his reply made no sense whatsoever as a response to your polite suggestion and request. True Wikipedians appreciate a lady like you here. He obviously doesn't know how to work collaboratively here with the necessary (and should-be-welcomed) feedbacks and advices. That's a skill he apparently doesn't need or unfortunately hasn't acquired in his workplace and/or school. --Menchi 00:35, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome!

[edit]

Took a bit of hunting around to figure out the talk pages. The help link you supplied in the welcome page, uh, helped.

In any case, thanks for the warm welcome.

Wikipedia is a fascinating project, something we were all projecting back in the heady early days of the net. Amazing what you've all accomplished in just a couple of years. Kudos all around.

So far I have to admit to being just a tad selfish with the edits, primarily adding external links to appropriate pages on my own website. But I've been making a mental note of the red links and will eventually come back and work on any I can help out with, probably beginning with the Australian outback.

I've been trying to fill out some of the information on various types of polymerization. Since I still consider my self a wikipedia newbie and there are aparently not many other people active on my topics I would appreciate it if you could glance over the articles I've been working on. Messages in strange places

I certainly wouldn't have caught it if I hadn't been watching Recent Changes. He's blaming the "software" for the problem, even though he first started messing with Robert Taylor and then again with Robert Taylor (composer) when I disambiguated. Help with Jehovist article

[edit]

Hi, Angela. I've been trying to figure out who to contact.

I've been trying to write an article on "Jehovist", but Someone else keeps deleting my stuff and claiming that my stuff is inaccurate, when in fact I've done the research and provided links. All he does, instead of doing the research himself, is quote the dictionary.

In case he deletes it again, I will print it here, so that you can check the accuracy yourself, or whoever ends up addressing this. Please follow the links.

If you deem it accurate, could you please do something about this nusance?

Automated wikipediholic test generator

Hi Angela, your automated test inspired me to write a program that generates an automated version of the test based on the HTML from the Wikipedia page. It's not quite done yet, but it works for the most part. Check it out if you're interested and let me know what you think. -- Merphant 00:55, 15 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. I tweaked it a little more, and I think it's finished now. I have the opposite problem as you: I only use Mozilla, so it might break under IE or others. Cricket

[edit]

Eh...I thought...that even though you found ant creepy, perhaps you would welcome a little cricket on your talk page for a few days ?

It was extremely familiar, after initial worry. It entered summer home, got in the kids room where they found it. I tried to convince it to climb on a paper, it fled on my shoulder, where my husband took a pict of it. Then, it stayed a long time on me, just travelling up and down. I put it outside on a plant, and it stayed there the whole afternoon, trying to clean itself from the webs (if you look carefully at the legs, you will see some of them left). It was not creepy at all :-) cricket (do you find me creepy ?)

A little bit of depression ?

Gouti

[edit]

Hi Angela,

I don't know if this is the right place to put this concern, but here goes. There is a anonymous user with the IP 64.219.195.152 who has made a number of entries regarding a Sammy Gouti. I noticed this user when he added Sammy Gouti to a list of prominent contributors to sociology which is on my watchlist. I'm a student of sociology and had never heard of Gouti, so I googled him and I found his webpage [2]. The webpage certainly didn't make Gouti sound like he belongs in a page of prominent sociologists and it reminded me of the style of the anonymous user, so I traced the IP address and it comes from an IP based in Houston, Texas, the same place that Gouti's webpage identifies as his home. In short, I think that Sammy Gouti is adding himself to different parts of Wikipedia, including the psychology and sociology page and wildly exaggerating his importance. Nothing this anonymous user, who I believe to be Mr. Gouti, has written appears to be strictly incorrect.

How to use talk pages

[edit]

Before I e-mailed, I wrote that same message here. And clicked "Save Page". The bio said Binet cut down on language usage and increased space perception. As to Cyan's advice, I initiated generatics by a link from "Peano axioms", which is under "Foundations of mathematics", where I thought would go. Now, Cyan suggests this. I don't understand Wikkiways on some things and I've searched 50 downloaded pages. and intiated many unanswered questions. Maybe I wouldn't annoy some people if I could, initially, get an occasional answer to a question.

As to my using "Talk Page", your hyperlink is the first time I've found the "Talk Page" of another person. Using the ID hyperlinked hasn't helped me so far.

As to IQ, here's my experience. I enlisted in Army Air Corp Jan 27, 1941; was discharged Dec. 22, 1945. Given the "Army Alpha Test" in 2 parts. Forced to take 1st part after being on guard duty all night. Taken from guard hut to exam room, without rest or breakfast. Forced to take 2nd part after working a night shift at Weather Station. Allowed breakfast, but no rest. During 5 years I mentioned this to others, found similar experiences for many of them. Never seen anything about this way of testing in the standard literature.jonhays 18:19, 21 Sep 2003 (UTC)

How can I ask a question?

[edit]

I've been asking, over and over, "How can I ask a question?" I was scolded for putting questions on their pages. You told me to use "discuss", which really confused me. I only discuss when I see some one else and don't think I'm talking to myself. I finally tried it with Michael Hardy, and now with you. It atill feels as if it were the "sound" of one tongue wagging. But maybe I'll get wiki with it. Thanks.

I do think I'll like it here

[edit]

Hi, and thanks for the welcome! Thanks for the links as well, I'd found most but not all of them. I've been wandering around for a couple weeks before deciding to get my feet wet. I've found plenty to improve. Finding time to improve them will be more difficult (student teaching, rehearsals, work, sleep, etc.). I do think I'll like it here. Strange information out of context to confuse you even before you archive your page

Here's an article about an MRI study at Yale U. on difference between female and male brains which I found online months ago, but misplaced. On Google, type "Rhyming tasks" for article,"Rhyming tasks male and female brains differently", in Yale Herald by Fiona Havers taken from paper in "Nature". Or type www.yaleherald.com/archive/xxi/3.2.95/news/rhyming.html. Another: ABC News Science on women adept verbally, men spatially. On Google, "Gender gap on the brain" or http://abcnews.go.com/sections/science/DyeHard/dye990602.htmljonhays 15:17, 22 Sep 2003 (UTC)

A stupa is not a pagoda

[edit]

Hi, I know for sure that a stupa should not be redirected to a pagoda- the only thing I wanted to check out was whether the pagoda evolved from the stupa. Even if the pagoda refers to a stupa, it is the pagoda which has to be redirected to the stupa. I am not ambiguous about it, just didn't find the time. Just give me a couple of days-KRS 02:06, 23 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I also don't want to get into an edit war:-). I won't change the redirect till I finish my work. Just thought that its better to be sure than wrong-KRS 06:00, 23 Sep 2003 (UTC)

  • As long as it's not a blank page I don't mind what happens to it. Angela

Try en2

[edit]

Yes, I brought the limit down. If you're not uploading images and don't mind not seeing the recent new images, you may wish to try the alternate server: en2.wikipedia.org. --Brion 23:09, 23 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Bloody newbies

[edit]

That's what I suggested to Kricxjo : put the interwiki links at the end of the articles, but I won't do it myself. I put each link on a new line because it's the easiest way (for me...) to manage them in the future (compare links of 2 articles in different languages, copy and paste new links, etc). Put them at the end of the article would be a to long work, for me. I always let them where they already are. My aim, adding interwiki links, is to help the "small Wikipedias". I think the English, German and French Wikipedias can manage by themselves to improve their article structure, if needed (my opinion is that a beginning could be to DECIDE where interwiki links have to be). In fact, I will only finish the job for the Malaisian and Hindi Wikipedias (if you know where I can get the malaisian characterset for Internet Explorer 6, it would be very helpful. I can't find it on microsoft.com...), and after, I will only maintain the one I already did (the 11 smallest Wikipedias, the one with less than 100 articles), and add interwiki links for the articles interesting me, mainly in the french version. Deletionism and consensus

[edit]

I have already explained to you why a writing that basically gives leeway to administrators to chose however they want to delete articles is dangerous. I have also explained why such an ambigious writing as "many people have expressed an opinion and there is a substantial majority" is very impractical because it can be interpreted in so many different ways.

What YOU have NOT answered is WHERE, except for the edit MyRedDice did Sep 20, it states that "a substantial majority" is enough for an article to get removed. Neither have you cared to explain how that guideline is compatible with consensus decision making. BL 18:28, 24 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Deletion of the Main Page!

[edit]

Thanks, Angela. You corrected things before I had a chance to get a really good look at it. RickK 03:10, 25 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Think of the positive: this problem in Wiki security has been found out in a fairly public manner, so it can't be abused (unless you count what BuddhaInside does to his own talk page as abuse, but even that doesn't damage the encyclopedia proper). Thanks to you and BuddhaInside, the problem will be fixed before anyone malevolent can get their hands on it. -- Cyan 03:37, 25 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Indeed -BuddhaInside

I just realized: he tried it on the Main Page because it worked on his talk page after RickK protected it. (It's a plausible conjecture anyway.) -- Cyan 20:52, 25 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Merges

[edit]

I'm good at moving articles from the main namespace to the talk namespace, but I don't have any experience in effecting a merger of page histories. In fact, that's why I didn't do it myself when I was moving Anthere's comments. -- Cyan 21:56, 25 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Blah McDuck

[edit]

A comment on the blah McDuck stuff you've deleted. They do seem to be cartoon characters. Whether they belong in an encylopedia is another matter. The same author seems to specialise in cartoon-related articles. Secretlondon 22:50, Sep 25, 2003 (UTC)

Copyvios

[edit]

Hi Angela. Re: Rewriting copyvio pages: Yes, I am aware. Strangely enough, I was just reading the discussion on Wikipedia talk:Votes for deletion/copyvio to try and resolve the issue in my head. This was actually one of my reasons for requesting to be a sysop. Having read the issue I've decided to refrain for now. There's plenty of other things I have to do! :) -- sugarfish 03:41, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

  • Oops! You're right of course about the sysop thing. I like the /Temp idea, but it would be just as easy to rewrite offline and paste in after deletion. I write a lot of stuff offline anyway... it keeps down the number of minor edits. -- sugarfish 03:49, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Deleting

[edit]

When you delete pages, be warned that the text in the deletion reason ends up in the deletion log raw. So, if you include an inlined image in the deletion reason, then wonderful images are displayed to anyone who has the pleasure to read through the deletion log. Less than ideal... Wik's War

[edit]

Dear Angela: Hi! Thanks for letting me know. Wik seems to have a war against me for whatever reason. If you look at the articles Ive written, one minute later Wik has found something wrong about it. I dont oppose editing as long as they are good edits, of course, but Wik seems to be obsessed. If I knew him in person Im afraid Id already had to tell him to stop harassing! LOL

I'll look at the page and see whats going on.

Once again, thanks for letting me know, and God bless you!

Sincerely yours, Antonio Wik's unobtainable fantasy Martin

Hey Angela: Thanks for supporting me. In giving your vote for me not to be de-administered, it meant a lot to me, specially now that....well, you know, someone seems to have...well I dont wanna say anything else cause the whole issue seems childish to me and I would like to drop out of trading punches with Wik and get over that.

But it meant a lot to me that you still think I am capable as an administrator and at least you pointed out your thoughts that the whole name convention argument doesnt mean Im abusing my powers.

Thanks, and God bless you.

Sincerely yours, Antonio From the Heart Martin

Abuse of power!

[edit]

Angela,

My good nature is wearing thin. I am arguing logically and concisely, and have added no "nonsense information" after it was requested that I did so. I have made no "personal attacks" on the anome; I described him as ignorant - which I demonstrated with facts, and arrogant - which I clearly showed by quoting him. If you would like to sensisily debate this matter, I am more than happy to do so. I consider your ban nothing more than an abuse of power.

P.s. The photograph below does not show a cricket (family Gryllidae) but a katydid or "long-horned grasshopper" of the Tettigoniidae. User:80.225.30.236. 27 Sept 21:20

Logo vote

[edit]

Concerning my vote on the arabic page, I'm not sure there are much users with 10 contribution on this Wikipedia. And obviouly, I will not do 2 editions just to be sure my vote will be considered. I don't speak arab, and there are no more articles I can link with the arab version. What edition may I do ? The fact I edit on this Wiki should be enough... Traroth

Firearms

[edit]

Hi Angela!

wrt removing the redirect of firearm to gun, I may actually understand how to do this on my own now; I had assumed such a redirection required powers which I did not possess.

AND, good grief, I just realized that I can do just about anything html-wise here (like hr). OK.

I could say alot on this subject, but in the hope of clarifying in few words, I would like to ensure that anyone "GO"ing to "firearm" within the encyclopedia, will not be automatically transported to the article entitled "gun". If all that is required to eliminate this behavior of the software is to edit the field which appears when I follow "what links here" at the bottom of the "gun" article, then the problem is solved. Is the automatic redirection permanently destroyed if I enter text into this field: ["#REDIRECT Gun"]?? If so, then I can fix everything :)

Thanks! --Mark

Hi Angela,you wrote:

Don't let what Wik's saying bother you. After all, you're not a real Wikipedian until you've been listed as a vandal or problem user! It's quite common!

Does that also include being suspected as a banned user? Ah, I thought so. That makes me feel much better!!!  ;-) -- Viajero 07:07, 28 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Logo votes and the clearing of talk pages

[edit]

Hi Angela,

thank you for your message. I did already register at Meta two days ago and added my "yes"-vote to the list. I did also some comments on the new logo in the other page.

I'll follow your recommendation regarding linking the user page at Meta to the regular user page.

Regarding clearing the Talk page, I had the messages quite a few days on the page, before deleting. What is the normal procedure? How long are messages left on the page?

Thanks again.

Flowers!

Hi Angela,

thank you again for your fast response and for the detailed explanation about deleting the Talk pages.

I am very impressed about your dedication, your experience and your kindness. Without persons like you a project like Wikipedia would never develop.

You deserve a lot of flowers. Here are a few, unfortunately only as an image.

Hello Angela, I'm trying to upload text about my village in the French Alps; the text I attempted to enter is from my own website, and I am the author of every last word. You have apparently scuttled my attempt because of copyright concerns, yet I am the author and copyright holder and agree to Wikipedia's conditions for posting text. How do I enter my text into the Montmin page? Jeantet

Hi Jeantet, I replied on your talk page. Angela 16:09, 28 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Hello Angela, Thank you for your prompt reply. I'm still not quite sure how to communicate using this format, it's not as obvious as you probably imagine! I logged in after posting the pages for Montmin and Faverges, I would appreciate having those pages attributed to me so that I may edit them further and add a few small photos when I am able to figure out how to do so (not obvious at all, I've tried looking up info on how to do this but response of your server and, frankly, the interface, leave a tiny bit to be desired for a neophyte...I imagine that you and the other users are accustomed to this communication format, but for me it is extremely cryptic...! the idea that I have to edit and save this page in order to communicate ... a text messaging format (like ICQ or MSN IM ) would be much more user friendly!

Hello Angela:

I have been "blocked" because of perceived copyright violations because my Wikipedia input is similar to pages on [3]. I own that site and all AFL pages associated with it. I have added the GNU stuff to my site, and given myself (and anyone else) permission to use my material on Wikipedia. (See [4]). I tried to contact you through the Wikipedia site, but I'm blocked or can't figure out how to do it. I also e-mailed you.

Please tell me what else I have to do. Thanks.

Regards,

Angelo Coniglio

P.S.: Nice name!! Please visit [5]

Hi Angela (and Angelo if you're reading this), I took the liberty of unblocking those two IPs; the website in question has a GFDL notice at the bottom of the main page, so these articles ought to be all right I think. - Hephaestos 22:59, 28 Sep 2003 (UTC)
