Tonawanda, New York → Tonawanda — Move disambiguation page to its ambiguous base name, a redirect. —-Una Smith (talk) 00:59, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support. Dab page includes things not normally called "Tonawanda, New York", which usually refers to the city. Station1 (talk) 21:04, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support A very appropriate move. Suggest that after the move takes place thatTonawanda, New York redirect to Tonawanda (CDP), New York, but that's just a suggestion.--Labattblueboy (talk) 05:15, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- I think Tonawanda, New York should be a partial dab page; its incoming links are a mess that is unusually hard to repair, but redirecting them to an article just pretends the mess doesn't exist. --Una Smith (talk) 17:07, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
- In NYS, towns are actually townships, divisions of the county. They are usually referred to as "Town of Xyz", while "Xyz, New York" usually means a city or village, or a CDP if there is no city or village. I just went through all the links and fixed those obviously meant for the town (plus one for North Tonawanda). I think it would now be relatively safe to redirect "Tonawanda, New York" to "Tonawanda (city), New York", but even safer to a dab page since we can't be certain that all links definitely mean the city. In any case, it should not point to the CDP. Station1 (talk) 00:58, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Disambiguation
[edit]Repairing incoming links to this page requires more research in reliable sources than usual. While repairing the majority of 90 recent incoming links, I find a timeline is helpful. Most incoming links to Tonawanda intend either the Town of Tonawanda (est. 1836) or the City of Tonawanda (est. 1904). References to "Tonawanda" prior to 1904 usually intend the Town, but references concerning lumber, shipping, etc. in the period 1854 to 1904 may intend the Village of Tonawanda (1854-1904). From its incorporated area on the south side of the Erie Canal, the Village expanded north into unincorporated Niagara County. In 1897 the north side broke away from the Village and incorporated as the City of North Tonawanda. In 1904 the Village was (re)incorporated as the City. --Una Smith (talk) 00:36, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
