Talk:Earl of Caithness

I believe there was a long period of overlap between the time of Caithness as a Norwegian or Danish earldom and Caithness as a Scottish earldom. I am wondering whether there is a date when the earldom can be said to have become exclusively Scottish. In his History of Caithness Calder says that the rule of Norwegian earls ended when Earl Magnus V died in 1331, but goes on to say that his successor, Henry St Clair, was invested by Haco VI of Norway. Also I am wondering whether and to what extent the Treaty of Perth (1266) made explicit reference to Caithness. (And what language was it in? French? Latin?) Laurel Bush 10:39, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC).

I think the earldom Henry St.Clair was invested to by Haakon, was that of Orkney. I think that already that time (if almost always) Caithness was regarded as scottish, whereas of course Orkney and Shetland were Norwegian until 1469. Marrtel 09:27, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
