20 is a lot, but bear in mind that I was up against one adversarial editor who I am having issues with (amaliel) and two other users who, well look at their edit histories (Feldspar and Sahara) and you'll see what's up. Suffice it to say, Gamaliel finally caved in and offered a compromise that he would accept. I have accepted it (with a tweak) and now it appears resolved. [[User:Rex071404|Rex071404 ]] 03:56, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

  • I sincerely hope the matter is resolved. If it isn't, please remember that you don't have to be a one-person army. There is an army of editors just a few clicks away. If you follow Wikipedia:Dispute resolution, you can call in a lot of neutral people to help get the article under control in a short time. Edit wars don't improve an article; they only waste time that could have been put to productive use. There are many thousands of people working on this project. Call upon them when you need them. Of course, you'll want to make sure your own conduct is above reproach. (Hint: don't revert 20 times in one day.  :-) Also, content disputes should be listed on Requests for comment, not ViP.) You can't go wrong if you do it by the book. Happy editing! SWAdair | Talk 04:49, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Copyvio2/Temp

[edit]

Your wish is our command! Done. Noel 09:32, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Rex071404 has been stalking me with a series of harassment edits -- here, here, here and here. On the first, his claim is patently false; on the second, it is a mere insult (against Wikipedia policy but only to be expected from Rex.) On the third, it is a matter of fact and interpretation in which I have no actual interest, despite my having edited the article before.

On the last, however, he is continuing to insert the same information, which is unverified (his claim that I can verify it through Amazon.com's "read a few sample pages from this book" is, of course, a farce) and whose relevance is equally doubtful (he states that Dedham was one of a number of New England communities where this condition applied, but made no attempt, as can be seen here, to insert this information into the article for any other town, or any article for the region. He claims that Dedham is of course the right place for it because Dedham is the town from which all the others sprung off -- so why was that information not worthy of insertion?) In short, it is harassment, probably in retaliation for his misdeeds on "Stolen Honor" coming back to haunt him. Please let me whether page protection is an option here, or any other option you think will be effective in dealing with this recidivist. -- Antaeus Feldspar 18:31, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Well, the issue wasn't so much on the factual content as that he was unquestionably doing it to harass (he admitted on WP:RFAr that he was doing it to "see what [my] reaction would be"), which in turn made it doubtful that the content was even factually correct. It seems to be moot now, if his claim to be leaving was actually truthful. Thank you for your help, though; just knowing I had someone reasonable I could turn to helped keep me on-keel. -- Antaeus Feldspar 16:46, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hey! I've created this new notice board specifically for articles related to people from the U.S. South. If you are interested in contributing, leave a message on the page and add articles you feel need to be reviewed, contributed to, or started. Mike H 21:07, Sep 29, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the warm greeting.

Even tho i've been playing around in everyone's fine work, rest assured I am still quite new to all this. Not an expert on much of anything unfortunatley, but I do like polearms so I'll keep on writing. Again, thanks for the welcome.

Thanks for letting me know. As far as I'm concerned though that's the sort of thing you can just do without notification. The IP is from a community college, and this being another semester it's obviously being used by someone else now. - Hephaestos|§ 15:44, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi there :) I think I've fixed it; the culprit was a missing square bracket at the end of the descriptive external link which MetalMilitia just added. (Incidentally, I've talked with him on MSN and he understands now why linkspamming isn't tolerated here now, so he promised to add his links only to the most relevant articles.) Seems the software automatically strips the trailing bracket from the next link in the article, perhaps unintentionally (I don't know if it's a known bug or not, but I'm too lazy to use sourceforge). I've also seen this happen to interlanguage links. Cheers, -- Hadal 06:27, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for letting me know about that article, which wasn't about MediaWiki templates, but rather templates used in programming languages. The original author didn't do a good job establishing context, I'm afraid. But, as chance would have it, I'm a computer science graduate, so I was able clarify the stub (I hope). Let me know if there's anything that still needs work. Regards, • Benc • 03:14, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Re: 65.247.35.18

[edit]

Thanks for the invite; I actually have a user account, but the edit servers appear to do session timeouts without notification if I go researching some detail, so I sometimes wind up as an IP addy instead. I also did go through the tutorial and related articles, but that extra apostrophe further down in the David Herbert Donald article completely eluded me, I'm impressed with your sleuthing (you must code ;-) ) Chris Rodgers 05:25, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • I know what you mean about the session time outs. Within the last couple of days that has happened to me several times, although it never had before. About that apostrophe -- I used to code, really simple things, but I haven't in a long time. The clue was the pattern of bolding that occurred when I tried to bold the name. That showed me where to look. I'm glad to see you have an account. I was embarrassed when I saw an anon making so many contributions and hadn't been welcomed yet. I'll see you around the WP. Happy editing! SWAdair | Talk 05:48, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Regarding the article I submitted 'Mens Mental Health. I am the author of this article. It was originally published in 'Mental Health Today' Sept 2004, in my name. It draws on the MIND article but is not the same and not an infringement -clearly referenced as a source in the usual way

  • Thank you for your response. It sometimes happens that an original author contributes their own work and someone (me, in this case) marks it as copyvio. I copied your comment to the listing at Wikipedia:Copyright problems so that the admin who checks into the article's status will see it. Ahh, now that I check, I see you've noted the same on the article's talk page. Do you own the copyright to the article submitted to Mental Health Today, or do they? You might want to add that information to your note on Talk:Mens_Mental_Health. I apologize for any inconvenience I've caused you. We are pretty conscientious about protecting copyrights. It is much more common for someone to improperly submit copyrighted material than for an original author to contribute material they've previously written, and I'm afraid this caused your submission to get flagged. I hope you continue to contribute, and if there is any way I can help you, please let me know. SWAdair | Talk 03:42, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • Thank you for your comments- they are very helpful. I have not contributed before, so this was something of a test - to see how it works. As I read more and pick up something of the ethos and culture I am hugely impressed with the rigour and scholarship that is evident everywhere.
    • Thanks for the warm welcome. Much appreciated. Jinko 12:05, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC) (even got my nick sorted!)
Err... Sorry to be dense. I cant actually find this article anymore? Thought I would do some more work on it - tidy up etc, but the copyvio issue is still unresolved? Cant access till there is a decision about that? Thanks Jinko 11:05, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Thank you. Got it. In terms of the article itself, am I waiting for an administrative adjudication regarding the copyvio issue?
Hello again. I still havent heard anything. Reluctant to work on this article untill its been 'cleared' - any ideas about what I can do? Jinko 09:06, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Thank you for your considerations - much appreciated. And, in anticipation of your success this evening, congratulations! Jinko 00:09, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Great! Thank you. I appreciate the thought you have put into this, and will bear in mind what you say - particularily for new articles. All I need to do now is find the time to work on it..... Regards Jinko 16:36, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Luisa Capetillo

[edit]

Hi there, thanks for looking over the article that I wrote. I gathered information about Luisa in various websites and modified them to come up with the article without violating copywright laws. Personally, I didn't like the point of view presented on the website cited and only used what is common fact. My son Antonio would like to know if you work for Southwest Airlines? If you do, get in touch with him, O.K? Thank you again, User:Marine 69-71

Thanks for your kind words. I worked on the article and did some changes. I'm glad that there are people like you working in Wikipedia and that I can count on you. Thanks once more. User:Marine 69-71

Barnstar

[edit]

Hmm, I can see Image:Original Barnstar.png just fine. I cleared out my browser cache a few minutes ago so I don't think it's an cached copy that I'm seeing. It's the wikifairies at play! Sorry I can't be more helpful, Wile E. Heresiarch 05:57, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • That was really odd. I could see all images except that one. I cleared cache, deleted all history, cookies, offline files then closed the browser and came back. I see it just fine now. Wikifairies, indeed. Thanks. SWAdair | Talk 06:03, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thanks

[edit]

Thanks for the explanation re Meelar. I have a question. Is there any way to be "credited" a page I added before registering my name? The creation of a certain page is currently just attributed to my IP address. Not that it matters a lot, but it would be nice to have all my contributions listed. Kvaks 08:52, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Redirects

[edit]

Thanks, but I already remembered that and am already fixing them. Nohat 10:17, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC) I understand you were just trying to be helpful, but it's a little bit demeaning for someone else to fix mistakes that I was perfectly capable of and in the process of fixing myself. Nohat 10:21, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • I'm sorry that I caused you to feel that way. That was certainly not my intent. I thought of it as teamwork, just trying to help someone who was clearly being productive. My apologies. SWAdair | Talk 10:24, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Image:Ibizanhoundsit.jpg

[edit]

I gave my permission to use this picture and the article I wrote about the breed. The picture has not been changed from my web page. It is a picture of one of my Ibizan Hounds. His name is Chaos. I took that picture when we lived in Las Vegas. I see my posting is still listed as having a problem.

Image:Ibizanhoundsit.jpg from [422] (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ibizanhound.htm). That page says the picture is courtesy of Rose Bednarski's Homepage [423] (http://www.dejavuehounds.com/) but I didn't find the picture there. Rose's page has probably changed since that picture was originally posted. SWAdair | Talk 08:30, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for contacting me about the photo. This picture is listed at Wikipedia_talk:List_of_images/Nature/Animals/Dogs#Photos_in_question, where another user wrote on 22 AUG "backtracked to original source and have sent email." There was no follow-up after that. Have you responded to User:Elf via e-mail? That was a couple of months ago and the current picture was uploaded on 16 OCT 04, indicating that perhaps the photo was deleted and then re-uploaded. We would love to be able to use this photo, but in the crazy world of the internet, it can sometimes be difficult to prove one's identity. If you would be willing to e-mail me (at SWAdair@computermail.net) from dejavueh@ix.netcom.com then I will consider that proof of identity and will mark the photo as released under GNU FDL. Again, we thank you for the picture -- it is the only Ibizan hound photo we have -- but we do have to make certain that the copyright owner has released it under the GNU FDL. Thank you. SWAdair | Talk 02:55, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • (Copy of text posted on Image talk:Ibizanhoundsit.jpg) -- The original copyright owner contacted me on my talk page and then again via e-mail (e-mail matching address given on her webpage), authorizing release. Content of e-mail was:
I can understand your need to make sure you have the copyright permission from the owner. Thanks so much for the security check- I've had stuff used before without my permission and appreciate doing this extra step. As you see, there are other photos of my dogs on my web pages and you can use any that you would like, as long as I know which ones with credit given to me.

Accordingly, I've removed the imagevio tag and removed the listing from Wikipedia:Copyright problems.End copied text. SWAdair | Talk 07:15, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Party Switches

[edit]

There are a rather large amount of Southerners who were Democrats prior to the 1994 Republican take over of Congress. Tauzin and Parker are examples, so are Richard Shelby, Ben Nighthorse Campbell, and Nathan Deal.

I've been going through the pre-104th Congress listings and changing them to reflect their party registration when elected.

http://bioguide.congress.gov is a good source for Congress-by-Congress listings of party affiliations.

Thanks

I've nominated you for promotion to sysop status. Please either accept or decline the nomination at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/SWAdair. Sarge Baldy 22:57, Oct 26, 2004 (UTC)

Hey, I see you've been nominated for Adminship. I hope you make it because you deserve to be there. I think that nobody in Wiki works harder then you when it comes to copyvios. If I had the power to vote I would've supported you hands down. Good Luck! User:Marine 69-71

Hey Buddy, I wasn't sure that I could vote but when I saw that Idiot Netoholic, who's not even an administrator oppose you, I told myself "I'm going to take a risk and vote for somebody I really believe will make a great administrator" and I did. I know your going to make it so, I want to be the first to congraulate you my friend.

Relkovic

[edit]

Er...thanx for your input. First, the autor's surname is (I'll write it without hacek) Relkovic, not Reljkovic. Second-no, the content of the article is a piece of propaganda, although it does contain some true basic bio facts and a mistranslated part that should have "proven" user Igor's national-political claims. Anyway- the article on Relkovic (a figure in South Slavic and Croatian Enlightenment literature) will be written- but it's purpuse should be to give basic information- not propagandist fantasies. The purportedly "controversial" status of Relkovic's national affiliation is just a Serbian fantasy. Two linx will suffice to illustrate this: one Italian, http://www.univ.trieste.it/~linline/pagine/primo/lett_serba_croata_I/programma.htm , and the other from Serbian language corpus in English-this period covered without any mention of Relkovic and others, for that matter: http://www.serbian-corpus.edu.yu/ie/sample/e18ct/barok.htm . So, I guess the best would be to start this page anew. Hastalavista Mir Harven 15:43, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Speedies

[edit]

Although you probably figured this out, the reason it appeared you created Melvin Dumar is that an admin deleted it out from under you as you were adding "{{delete}}". By the looks of your RfA vote, you'll be able to see and delete these yourself very soon, so I'd like to give you an early and whole-hearted welcome to adminship! Cool Hand Luke 08:26, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Congrats

[edit]

Luke's right, you're an admin. I just hit the button, so you should see some more options now. I know you've read it already, but I encourage you to review the Wikipedia:Administrator's reading list, and also to recheck any policy document before you do something for the first time. In fact, my advice is to ask an old hand before you do your first protection/speedy deletion/anonymous vandal block -- I did that when I became an admin, and I've never been sorry I took the extra time to get an outside opinion. If you ever want to shoot me a question, I'm very open to it -- just let me know. Obviously the community feels you'll do a good job, so I have no concerns. My other advice -- don't burn out on admin stuff. Protecting and deleting pages is not why you got involved here and it's not enough to make anyone feel fulfilled as a Wikieditor. Make sure you take time to do the things you enjoy. There are 300+ admins -- we can shoulder the load together. Congratulations once again for your successful nomination, and my best wishes in your new responsibilities. Happy adminning, Jwrosenzweig 23:48, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Congrats

[edit]

Hey, I knew you'll make it. I'm really happy for you because I've seen your dedication. I didn't make it but, don't feel sorry for me friend, I'm O.K. with it. I'll continue to write my mini-bios. As long as I can continue educating others with my work, I'll be happy. Remember you have a friend in me.

Tony the Marine

And yet more Congrats!

[edit]

Adding my voice to the others congratulating you! A well-deserved honor and a responsibility that I know is in good hands. -- Antaeus Feldspar 04:03, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I only glanced at it, but it appears that the text was not wholly replaced with the copyvio notice because the infringing text was only a portion of the article (see the talk page). Under these circumstances, we probably aren't too concerned if the infringement is buried in the page history. But then you're left with what to do about the temp page. If the content there is worth merging, you could either add in what seems appropriate with an indication of where it came from, or try the more challenging delete-move-and-restore to merge the page histories. --Michael Snow 06:16, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit]

Regarding this article, and the associated one. The histories show a lot of copy and pastes back and forth - ideal for a page history merge.

  1. Delete Lambda Legal (temporary)
  2. Move Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund to Lambda Legal
  3. Special:Undelete/Lambda Legal to restore the deleted edits.

Thanks. -- Netoholic @ 04:41, 2004 Nov 6 (UTC)

I looked at the website, and while the full name is "Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund", they self-identify as "Lambda Legal". That name also seems to me the most popular from Google. -- Netoholic @ 05:07, 2004 Nov 6 (UTC)

Jefferson Penberthy page (Your recent action

[edit]

Hi

The extract in the page was a letter sent by the authour to the Indian High court the letter has been quoted in sevral news articles in the Indian media - however the letter itself is not copyright and in the public domain since it was submitted as court evidence for anyone to report on or use

Accordingly there is no copyright violation as far as the printing of this letter in wikipedia and adminstrator should revert this page to the original -

Problems arouse when the text was matched with another website reproducing the non copyright material - The authour of the letter is a long standing journalist - the letter is important as it a topical subject in India on questions raised regarding the facts leading to rioting in India. The letter is quoted and links placed to it - by several wikipedia writers on the subject

Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jefferson_Penberthy"

  • Copy of reply posted on Talk:Jefferson Penberthy: It wasn't the letter that I was concerned about. I'm assuming that text to be in the public domain. The possible copyright violation is the two introductory paragraphs. They are almost verbatim from the site listed. A substantial portion is identical -- there was not enough rewording to avoid copyright infringement. End copied text. SWAdair | Talk 03:51, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

When the vandalism isn't something that will seriously disrupt things, I've found that they'll usually stop if you allow it to stay for a while, then revert after they've stopped paying attention. [edit]

How you doing my friend? I have something on my mind that I want to dicuss with you. I wrote an article about Lolita Lebron and my main objective, as in all my articles, is to educate others without expressing a P.O.V. I noticed that someone recently posted the following: "Finally, Ms. Lebron was the focus of the 2004 article titled "A Terrorist in the House" by Manuel Roig-Franzia for the Washington Post." Now, since the word "Terrorist" is such a strong word nowadays and since a person may be a "terrorist" for some and but, a "hero" for others. I was wondering if by posting what I mentioned, the person was unintentionally shifting the article from NPOV to POV. I would like your opinion. Your friend Tony the Marine

Re: Shared IP

[edit]
  • 62.171.194.9 is part of the IFL network, which most (?) schools in the UK connect to the internet through. They seem to run a caching system - based on reverse DNS, it looks like 62.171.194.4-62.171.194.13 are all allocated for web caches. As it's all schools connected to IFL, I dare say a lot of silly vandalism occurs through it. --DomCleal 22:50, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • Just looking through the contributions for that IP and histories of articles they edit, web caches seem to extend quite far through the whole class 6 block --DomCleal 22:54, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Random

[edit]

Random numbers are very usefull and they were real random numbers!

  • I understand the value of random numbers, but a list of random numbers does not make an encyclopedia article. An article should be about random numbers, explaining what they are used for, how they are generated, maybe even explaining how we can determine if a string of numbers is truly random. An article should inform readers about a topic. I deleted the article because it was not an article, but only a list of numbers. SWAdair | Talk 03:43, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
