External links
[edit]Hi. I deleted External links relating to India because Wikipedia is not a link farm. Please don't create articles which only contain links to other websites. RickK 19:37, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)
We don't have to worry about disk space, so size of the article isn't an issue, and the article itself has sections, so you can go from section to section on the page. Do we really need to worry about article size? RickK 20:01, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]I want to create a new category at the bottom of a page. How do I activate a new category and what are the criteria for addition? [[User:Nichalp|¶ nichalp | Talk]] 20:38, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)
- At the bottom of a page? Categories appear at the top of the entry, though you do enter them at the bottom. First check to see if an appropriate or very similar category already exists (just click on the Categories link in any article for a full list). If not, you can create the category just by adding the category link, e.g. [[Category:Large equestrian dogs]]. That's all there is to it--you've created a category. After saving the article, you can click on the category link and enter a description and some information about the category. HTH :-) — Frecklefoot | Talk 20:53, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)
- My bad. I am using an old skin, and they appear at the top of the article. :-S — Frecklefoot | Talk 22:57, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)
Hello
[edit]Sorry for not responding to you sooner; I just saw your comment on RfA and realized I had forgotten to respond to your question. Anyway here's my answer:
- What I meant when I said the "table is 1980s-like" I meant the appearance, not the data — the table looked a little flat.
- The religion section at the time said something like "all of the religions groups coexist peaceably" or something to that effect. That seemed to me to be POV. But it's fixed now.
Again, thanks, and I apologize that I responded so late. :) Neutrality 20:01, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks. by the way, I wanted to let you know that you did a fantastic job on India. It looks great. Neutrality 20:13, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit]I'm not really familiar with it, though I think I'll take a look at the article. Sounds interesting and complex. Neutrality 23:10, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for the Barnstar on my user page! :-) You've done great work too. --dmmaus 06:20, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Affiliate nations
[edit]I added the full list to International Cricket Council. --dmmaus 23:13, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I've also changed the separate list articles to redirects to International Cricket Council. The separate lists were just unadorned lsts of country names, and redundant to the information in the ICC article. --dmmaus 23:21, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Finding the images was easy. I just checked the foreign language links on Wikipedia for cricket. There are some more, if you want. -- Chris 73 | Talk 06:30, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for you message. I think that the external links section would be professional if it linked to the biggest and more important websites... so a person visiting the Wikipedia could go to the Cricinfo website and see a whole range from scorecards, players profiles... after all it is the World's largest cricket website.
Anyway, although I think that your cricket diagrams on Cricket is pretty adequete looking, so there wouldn't be a need to improve it, just to make it look better. Good job, on your work to revamp the Cricket article, so looks much better and more organized than before.

Cricket featured article
[edit]Sorry, I've been busy starting a new job - I haven't had time to even look at Wikipedia in the past few days. I see you and ALoan and others are doing a good job addressing the comments made on the Featured Article page. It's definitely improved the page. As for the voting, I'd rather leave that to others, since I helped put the new version together. --dmmaus 09:51, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Wow - your first rewrite of cricket was great, but your second is fantastic. I am very impressed - well done! You are officially my hero for today, and here is a gold star (I hope you don't mind being awarded a Soviet honour). -- ALoan (Talk) 10:05, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message. Re wikihistory - it is nothing official, just a personal mark of respect and thanks that I have recently instituted. Previously awarded to Kate Turner who sorted out the bulk of the redirects for cricket (sport). And reawarded to Kate today for meritorious conduct in sorting out Changing attribution for an edit. -- ALoan (Talk) 10:57, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I know as much as you do about the copyright status. The german user contributing the images was active only for one day, and I do not know the copyright status of the images. The images are also used on nl:Cricket. If you can find a copyrighted source, then the images should be removed, otherwise they are sort of in a grey zone. -- Chris 73 Talk 07:21, Sep 4, 2004 (UTC)

[edit]Please don't change American English into British English unless the subject is specific to a country that uses BE. --Jiang 19:08, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Would that would mean recognising that AE is the defacto language of wikipedia for articles not related to USA? --nichalp
No, current policy states that for non country-specific articles, whoever the major contributor is should set the standard and subsequent editors should respect that standard, be it AE, CE, BE, or whatever. In this case, the subject (Bill Clinton) is related to the USA and the correct spelling should be "hospitalized". --Jiang 03:50, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi Nicholas, Congrats. Your hard work paid off. Here is one of those lesser Barn Stars. ;-)
Awarded to User:Nichalp for his hard work in improving the article India and elevating its status to Featured article by modifying it to requests made by fellow wikipedians. --Ankur 07:03, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the Barnstar but I dont think it was that big an effort. Thanks again tho :-) --Ankur 19:59, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Adminship
[edit]Hi, congratulations on your efforts in bringing India to featured article status. You have done lots of good, NPOV edits and engage in constructive discussion. I want to nominate you for adminship, would you agree to be one? (I am almost totally out of Wikipedia(having asked for de-admin) and so too are some other good, balanced, Indian contributors whom I nominated/ supported) KRS 13:05, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I have nominated you for adminship. Please convey your acceptance in the page. Best wishes. As for me, I don't think I will get into Wikipedia again seriously- main reasons being I feel that there is too much I can contribute and too much waste of time in unproductive discussions:-) KRS 13:03, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Hi Nicholas -- please edit the offending phrase to be accurate -- for example "dominated much of the period" or "for a time dominated" rather than removing the entire sentence.
Thanks, BCorr|Брайен 19:52, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Portland, OR coastal city?
[edit]Hi Nicholas,
I'm curious if Portland should actually be listed as a Coastal City. It's definitely a port town (due to the river) but it's 1-2 hr drive from here to the coast... I'm unfamiliar with what the criteria are for categorizing, though, so maybe it qualifies?
Anyway, here's several largish Oregon towns on that are on the coast. I'm not sure if they're big enough to belong in this category, but what do you think? Astoria, Oregon, Lincoln_City,_Oregon, and Newport,_Oregon Bryce 02:46, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
RE: Tamil
[edit]Hey man! you're really rocking:) If you pronounce the name as nikOlas, then நிகோலஸ்; if you pronounce it as nikkOlas then நிக்கோலஸ். I mean, how you pronounce the mid ch in your name. AFAIK, here people use strong K in the middle and so use the second form mostly. Regards. --Rrjanbiah 05:07, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Since Tamil got phonetic writing, one has to write the way as they pronounce. So, your name is in Tamil is நிகோலிஸ். But, I guess, it will take some more time to recognise it is just a (human) name:) --Rrjanbiah 14:30, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)

dippers
[edit]Yes, I suppose you're right. I don't hear the term used often over here and I'm still depressed after coming back from a chilly Oval and seeing us lose after getting the Windies to 147-8:(( so my brain isn't functioning very well at the mo. I'll stay off amending the forms of cricket page till I'm awake, but the first sentence doesn't make sense (I can't think of a good intro at the mo - perhaps you'd like first go). You're a sysop!
[edit]I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. Congratulations!. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | Talk 15:00, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit]I can't understand why he was picked if he wasn't going to bowl. Couldn't believe it when Trescothick came on; wonder what the King of Spain was thinking then! Perhaps he'd have got out that @*@&@&!**&! Bradshaw! We'll never know:( Jongarrettuk 20:10, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Future cricket articles
[edit]I want to finish history of cricket, or at least the controversies first. As far as writing other articles, I could be tempted to cover unusual dismissals, but I'm not about to right a discourse on the use of rollers!! Jongarrettuk 20:39, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Hello, Nichalp. You recently added to Crispus Attucks the line "Recent evidence points to the fact that Crispus Attucks was not literally the first man to be killed, but that he was struck by a bullet deflected from another person." Do you have the evidence for this - it seems slightly dubious? (see article's talk page for the little discussion on the matter). Thank you. Regards, Whosyourjudas (talk) 00:48, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Cricket - methods of dismissal
[edit]Ooops, made a little error there. Copying and pasting from Bowled and not remembering to change the sentence. On the list of commonality of dismissal, I'm not 100% sure how bowled compares with lbw. Is the list: caught, bowled, lbw, run out, stumped, hit wicket - or are bowled and lbw the other way round? Also, is run out higher up for one day cricket? Jongarrettuk 19:32, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)
"Minor news"

selected anniversaries
[edit]Re: " 20:38, 9 Oct 2004 Nichalp m (its strange that only *one* sport has its events listed on the main page)"
One sport ? I have added significant dates in baseball and soccer. That's *TWO* ! And I've been avoiding american rugby, errr... "football" to avoid making it too US-centric on the MainPage. The other sports I am familiar with are not in season yet ! ....
Where in Wikipedia can I find info on significant dates in *other* sports ? Please let me know. And please add cricket dates, as you should know better than I do. Thanks. -- PFHLai 12:29, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Besides sports, anniversaries of significant events in the history of India are also welcome. Thanks. -- PFHLai 05:05, 2004 Oct 14 (UTC)
Facts about India
[edit]Hey Nichalp,
Could you please add your sources to the Facts about India page? It looks like that forward email I had got earlier. If it is the same one, which I am hoping its not, then this article serves no purpose.

Facs about India

Should we put the article up for deletion?

An unrelated question
[edit]I wonder whether you could help me out on this one. The article on Adolf Hitler contains the sentence: "However in the East, he and Nazism are seen in a much more neutral context, sometimes even favorably, such as in Japan and India and much of the Islamic world." Is that really true as far as India is concerned? Many thanks for any help you can give me. jguk 20:08, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)
