Footnotes
[edit]The footnotes for the tables of defunct teams and teams that never played are somehow messed up. The first note for San Antonio is correctly showing as 8, but the second San Antonio listing changes that to 9 and pushes the following notes to the next number. That is, instead of having footnotes 8, 8, 9, and 10 in the tables, they show up as 8, 9, 10, and 11 (a number with no corresponding note). I can't seem to fix this. Anybody else want to take a crack at it? --Khajidha (talk) 16:28, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
- It's probably a good idea to convert to a better footnote template such as Template:efn. I can give it a try today or tomorrow if I have some time. BLAIXX 16:43, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
What happened to the old CFL logo (2002-2015)?
[edit]The old logo that was used by the league from 2002 to 2015 seems to have disappeared from the site. Does anyone know what happened to it? Did it get renamed or deleted? For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to this logo. AquilaXIII (talk) 06:21, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
- Per the file page, it was deleted because it violated non-free use policy. BilCat (talk) 06:30, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
Canadian football / American football difference in lead section
[edit]Saw that a small paragraph has been added to the lead outlining some of the differences between Canadian and American football, but I don't feel this is relevant as the article is on a Canadian football league, not the subject of Canadian football. The latter article contains a similar section in its lead with a link to the same article referenced in this one and does a much better job of outlining the differences between the two sports. I don't think this paragraph is relevant to the CFL article, but wanted to get others thoughts on whether it should remain, be deleted or moved to a different section of the article. OliverEastwood talk 14:47, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- In general I agree with you. That said, it's not the most intrusive paragraph. On balance I think it's probably unneeded, though. oknazevad (talk) 20:11, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Deleted. The paragraph confused the league (CFL) with the game (Canadian football). The material is relevant to the game, not the league.--Khajidha (talk) 13:41, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Questions for NFL, CFL projects
[edit]Hello, I have a few questions for the CFL and NFL project users
1. For the CFL, WP:NGRIDIRON states that Canadian football players are presumed notable if they played in the Canadian Football League, my question is, are the pre-CFL players notable too, because the league was founded as a merger between the IRFU and WIFU, so it was the same teams and players, just a different name of the league. I was wondering because I created a few Canadian football coach articles and wanted to make sure they would not be deleted (the current ones I have created I have made sure have received a lot of coverage (as some articles pass GNG with for say, 3 or 4 articles with SIGCOV, I made sure they received more than that, see Rev. Father Stanton)) And also, if they are notable, how far back would the notability go?
2. For the NFL, in 1920, some of the NFL teams played against non league opponents, and they were counted as official games (in fact, I've created articles for some of those teams, see Lansing Oldsmobile, Kewanee Walworths, Zanesville Mark Grays, Gary Elks, Columbus Wagner Pirates, Chicago Boosters, Moline Universal Tractors, and those are some of the weirdest team names I've ever seen) this was only in the first season, though. Should the players and head coaches from the non league teams have articles too? As NGRIDIRON says that players in the NFL are notable. However, the only sources for the players would most likely just be a short newspaper article listing the rosters, which is not significant coverage. In addition, these players do not have NFL.com, Pro-Football-Reference.com, or profootballarchives pages. I don't think these players should have articles since there is probably barely anything on them, as even some NFL players from the 20s don't have much on them.
3. Also for the NFL, should the Syracuse Pros players have articles? As they do not have Pro Football Reference pages and the Pros are a debated NFL team.
4. Again NFL, but this is more minor league, I was going to create an article for Dutch Slagle (I already did make an article for him, but it was changed to a redirect because "minor league coaches don't pass notability criteria", but that was good at the time because I barely had any sources), coach of the Wilmington Clippers in 1937, but I'm not sure if he is also George Slagle who played in the NFL in 1926. I think this because it says here that he spent time with Louisville, where George Slagle played. (and he does meet GNG based on my newspaper clippings, see [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] plus more)
Ref | Name | BDate | DDate | Played | Coached |

PFR | George Slagle | June23,1899 | ? | 1 game (1926) | DNC |
PFArchives | George E. Slagle | Sept25,1900 | Nov14,1946 | 1 game (1926) | DNC |

Grey Cup championships
[edit]Just to be clear in the infobox. We're not counting pre-CFL Grey Cup championships? GoodDay (talk) 03:53, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- Correct. This is the article on the CFL, not the Grey Cup.-- Earl Andrew - talk 04:05, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
Gap in Timeline
[edit]I understand that the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic, but why is there a gap in the timeline for each team? After all, they didn't cease to exist during that time, but the gap makes it seem as if they did. As such, the gaps should be filled in. Assadzadeh (talk) 06:02, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
Background colors in team tables
[edit]@Oknazevad Actually, some of the other major North American sports leagues have phased it out, such as NFL and NHL. I don't know if MLS ever had it, but it does not now. It's still on the NBA and MLB pages. I also removed it from WNBA as well, because the black background for the Western Conference was too bold and distracting. I would prefer commonality as well, but I don't think editors of the leagues mentioned above would allow it to be added back. So, is there another reason that it should be kept besides commonality? Assadzadeh (talk) 15:04, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- Unlike the NFL article, the colors here serve the additional function of acting as a color-coding for the map of the teams. oknazevad (talk) 16:27, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- In that case then, the color-coding should be changed to more closely match the map. For one of the other leagues (I think it was the NHL) a user suggested changing the color-coding to match the divisions. Following this reasoning, the NFL table would have 8 different colors.
- I would like to expand this conversation to include the other sports leagues as well, but don't know if there is a discussion group that covers them all. Do you know? Assadzadeh (talk) 16:49, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- The colors do match the map markers, at least to my eyes.
- As for a broader discussion, I'd think WT:SPORTS would be the place since it covers all sports oknazevad (talk) 19:07, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Oknazevad Thank you for the link, I'll post a question there.
- What I meant regarding the colors was that they should be salmon and light blue to match the map closer, tather than red and navy blue.
- There was a previous discussion where you had said "Frankly, the colors in the articles on the other major leagues, which inspired this, are probably non-compliant and should be removed, too." So, is your opinion the same or do you now believe that the colors should be kept for some of the sports leagues. but not others? Assadzadeh (talk) 23:26, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- My view on the colors has gone back and forth. On one hand, are they really needed? No. But as I said, they do act as a secondary key for the accompanying map.
- And the colors are close to the point markers on the map, not the shading of the provinces, which I feel is unneeded. That color I'd rather remove, as it adds nothing. Teams aren't located by province, but by city, and the point markers cover that. I don't think the NBA, NHL, or MLS maps should have them either.
- It's pointless for all of Texas to be one shade because Dallas has a team. And the striping of New York State because Buffalo is in a different division than the Rangers and Islanders is ugly and uninformative. It's not like eastern Long Island is Sabers territory. Why should the map be drawn like it is? oknazevad (talk) 02:55, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
