When was it not fashionable to plan one's career? The statement makes it sound as if such planning became fashionable only in recent decades. Moreover, "fashionable" makes it sound frivolous. Michael Hardy 01:30 Apr 27, 2003 (UTC)

The "Historical Changes" section is flawed. It is simply not true that the concept of career did not exist before modernity. Ancient politicians had very ambitious notions of career. Even for serf-classes, career advancement was possible through military involvement.

The concept of career also varies among various cultures. How career is understood in the U.S. is different than how it would be understood in the E.U. and other parts of the world.

I've removed the following external links as they are generally low-quality - most of them relate to particular countries or sectors:

Career and similar topics (such as Resume) tend to attract link-spam or low quality links. If a few, high-quality links are included in the article, this will discourage spam.

Feel free to add additional, universally applicable links. twilsonb (talk) 06:40, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed cluster merge

[edit]

I'm proposing that Job hunting, Recommendation letter and Reference letter be merged into this article. Reasons follow:

  • Each of these four are either stubs or start-class articles
  • Each is best understood in conjuntion with the others
  • None of these currently has sufficient breadth to justify a separate article at this point.

What do others think? ClaretAsh 11:29, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Whilst I agree there is a relationship between these articles as they all relate to work/jobs, I do not agree they should all be merged together. There would be some validity in incorporating by merging the content of Recommendation letter into Job hunting. I do not agee there is a similar such relationship of the first two with Reference letter or Career. There is another article Background check which could be reviewed in relation to the article Reference letter which could possibly be incorporated there. Also came across an article Trends in pre-employment screening which is an orphan and would be a prime candidate for including with the one on Background check too. I would vote for the last of the four, Career to be left as a free-standing article.Tmol42 (talk) 23:41, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your advice. Nonetheless, I think I'll withdraw the merge proposal for the time being. Some of these articles are obvious candidates for merging but, as you've pointed out, not necessarily to here. Also, I've since come across other articles (e.g. Employment reference letter) to which a merge would be better directed. Thanks again for your comments. "Reasons why people change careers" section

[edit]

I think this should be "Reasons why people change jobs" because career change and job change are two different things. All the reasons listed in this section are suitable for job change not career change. For example one point says "For better compensation and benefits". For this reason an employee will change job/company not career. Career change is possible within the same company. Similarly an employee will not change his career just because he's "Having a poor relationship with a manager(s)". For this job change is suitable. For example an employee is web designer and employed in IT industry. Now this employee may decide to become a full time writer and make it his career. This is called a career change. What other people have to say? So please make proper changes or add a new section which specifically lists out why people change career. Some valid points might be, not able to decide in the beginning what career path to take, or many people change career because of their spouses to help them in their career. For example a woman is doing good at her own small business. After her marriage her husband who's mine worker may decide to devote his full time to his wife's business may be by becoming manager or something. 122.177.7.87 (talk) 08:28, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, totally agree. My proposal is that this section is lifted as is and included within the article Job (role) where it would improve the content there as is. There would be no requirement to create a section here on changing career to replace it immediately. Rather than just include some prose it would be better if a source could be found then a section could be created.Tmol42 (talk) 10:29, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Career advancement

"Career advancement" seems to be a popular topic, it could use some explanation in this article. -- Beland (talk) 02:15, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge with Career in Pakistan

[edit]

No need of separate article for career options in a country . Either merge it to Career or Pakistan before 7 January 2014 else the creator's work would be lost . Skr15081997 (talk) 07:53, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

the word "career" as a person's "course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)". This definition relates "career" to a range of aspects of an individual's life, learning, and work.
