[edit]I just resotred the image after somebody deleted it without explanation. However, now I come to look at it, I see the image is called "Alexander Langmuir" while this page is about "Irving Langmuir" - are they the same person? Maybe the image shouldn't be here after all... --Camembert
- It looks like they're not the same person at all - there is a picture of Irving at [1], and he doesn't look much like Alexander, who is at [2] - that page also tells us that Alexander did things after Irving was dead ("Langmuir was the CDC's chief epidemiologist from 1949 to 1970" - Irving died 1957). So they're different. This leaves us with an orphan image at Image:Alexander Langmuir (small).jpg (this means the original deletor was correct - but could you please leave an explanation of deletions either on the talk page or in the edit summary next time) --Camembert
Updating
[edit]I am about to begin a full-face lift of this article; while it is ok in its current form i feel that it can be (and should be) much larger. So please bare with me as a move things around here and there, oh and please fell free to correct any spelling/grammar mistakes as i am a bad speller. bakuzjw (aka 578) 01:16, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
>> His most noted publication was the famous 1919 article "The Arrangement of Electrons in Atoms and Molecules" JACS, Vol. 41, No. 6, 868.
This article (doi: 10.1021/ja02227a002) is cited about 40 times (since 1996) compared to 1500 time for the article "The adsorption of gases on plane surfaces of glass, mica and platinum " in the same journal (DOI: 10.1021/ja02242a004). I've at least added both articles as external links. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 145.94.80.126 (talk) 16:39, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Langmuirtime.jpeg
[edit]Image:Langmuirtime.jpeg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Absorption vs. Adsorption
[edit]The biography section (Later Years) states that "He joined Katharine B. Blodgett to study thin films and surface absorption." However, as confirmed by the given external link: "Irving Langmuir a great physical Chemist", his work was on surface adsorption (with a "d"). This may be a little on the nit-picky side, but although the spelling difference between "adsorption" and "absorption" may be small, the difference is substantial. I believe this was most likely a simple typo by the author so I will go ahead and make the edit. 52.129.8.52 (talk) 14:05, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Personal Life
[edit]I can't find any references online to the ice skating accident. There are no references included in this article to verify it. Further, it strikes me as extremely suspect that the ability to remember things from when he was 10 years old (1891) would be of any use to remembering WW1 battle plans, since he would have been over 30 years old during WW1. And in any case, if he was at university at the time, how would he have any useful knowledge of battle plans? This is most likely a fake statement, I'm deleting it until someone can find a reference for it —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.165.172.116 (talk) 02:02, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Research: Possible removal of paragraph
[edit]The very last paragraph of the "Research" section is pretty much a word-for-word copy of the cited source. Moreover, I would not consider the cited source to be a good source on biographical information especially since that source is using the supposed information to further an agenda. Additionally, that source has a flagrant misunderstanding of zero-point energy (it argues that energy may be "squeezed" from the vacuum and collected by a device) which calls in to question the source's validity. This page contains the offending narrative on zero-point energy.
I think that we should either use a better source for this last paragraph, or we should remove it from the article.

Did he invent the "Diatron"
[edit]The Union Alumni Review, Volume 4, page 272 states Dr. Irving Langmuir is the inventor of something called a Diatron. But I am not sure what he invented that was called a diatron. I have made a request to add an entry for diatron in Wiktionary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thinkadoodle (talk • contribs) 18:42, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
