Who did Handals get selected as the FMLN candidate over? 152.163.100.138 19:28, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
No mention of strategy
[edit]It's odd that the article doesn't explore any of the winning strategy, such as ARENA's warnings that electing Handal would hurt U.S.-Salvadoran diplomatic relations and make the U.S. government less friendly toward Salvadorans living within its borders. It was an extremely effective strategy and deserves mention. I'll try to look up some good sources to cite.
Less likely to find sources to show that many Salvadoran citizens in the eastern part of the country privately were alleging voter fraud, claiming that visitors purporting to work with the national census really were gathering information in order to be able to falsify votes in favor of ARENA. Note that I'm not supporting these allegations — as an outsider I found them more indicative of governmental distrust in areas where the popular sentiment runs toward the FMLN than of actual government misconduct — but I'll look to see if there are any solid sources to show that people made this claim. (Certainly I met more than one person who made it, but that's hardly the stuff of a citation.) --Lawikitejana 05:25, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
